Microsoft has confirmed a known issue causing Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook for Windows

Microsoft has confirmed a known issue causing Microsoft Teams and the new Outlook for Windows to crash, close unexpectedly, or fail to launch on certain ARM-based Windows 11 devices after the August 2026 security updates.

Affected Systems

  • ARM-based PCs running Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, or 26H1
  • Devices such as:
    • Surface Pro 11
    • Surface Laptop 7
    • Other Snapdragon-powered Windows-on-ARM PCs
  • Primarily affects systems that have not received recent Microsoft Store updates, especially newly imaged or newly deployed devices.

Symptoms

  • Microsoft Teams fails to start.
  • New Outlook opens and immediately closes.
  • Applications may display a white screen before crashing.
  • Classic Outlook, Word, Excel, and other traditional Microsoft 365 applications are not known to be affected.

Triggering Update

Microsoft identified the issue after installation of Windows security updates released on or after August 11, 2026, including KB5121003.

Microsoft's Current Workaround

Microsoft recommends updating the Auto Super Resolution Package through the Microsoft Store:
  1. Open Microsoft Store
  2. Select Downloads/Library
  3. Click Check for updates
  4. Install Auto Super Resolution Package version 1.0.19.0 or later
Microsoft has marked the issue as mitigated through this workaround while a permanent fix is being developed for a future Windows update.

Guidance for IT Administrators

If your organization manages Windows-on-ARM devices:
  • Verify whether affected devices have installed the latest Store updates.
  • Test the Auto Super Resolution Package update before broader remediation efforts.
  • Consider pausing deployment of KB5121003 to ARM devices if Teams and New Outlook are business-critical and affected in your environment.
  • New Outlook users may temporarily use Classic Outlook where available.

Status

Microsoft is actively working on a permanent resolution and plans to deliver it through a future Windows update. No release date has been announced.
For a Systems Administrator, I'd recommend checking any Surface Laptop 7, Surface Pro 11, or Snapdragon-based endpoints in Intune/ConfigMgr and ensuring Microsoft Store updates, particularly the Auto Super Resolution Package, are current before escalating Teams or Outlook crash reports.
